The American Modern Opera Company (AMOC) returns to the Clark this summer for a twilight outdoor performance of Luigi Nono’s La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura (1988-89). Inspired by a wall inscription the composer encountered in a monastery in Toledo – “Wanderer, there is no way, there is only wandering”– this richly theatrical composition is a meditation on how we move forward when no path seems to exist.

Virtual: The Rhinoceros, From Every Angle

The rhinoceros has been called a surrealist animal due to its associations with the work of Eugène Ionesco, Salvador Dalí, and François-Xavier Lalanne. Exhibition curator Kathleen Morris explores the ways these artists used the captivating mammal in their work. She focuses particularly on François-Xavier Lalanne, who repeatedly employed the animal as a subject, including mounting an exhibition in 1980 called “Le Rhinocéros dans tous ses états”.

This summer, join Clark staff and other book lovers for lively discussions of three novels by Norwegian authors. The first novel is from Sigrid Undset’s trilogy, Kristin Lavransdatter. The Wreath begins the saga of a strong fourteenth-century woman. Undset carefully reconstructed medieval Norway, enriching her text with descriptions of cultural traditions and folklore, setting Kristin’s adventures against Norway’s dramatic mountains and stunning fjords. Undset won the Nobel Prize for Literature for these volumes in 1928.

Summer Book Clun presents The Complete and Original Norwegian Folk Tales of Asbjørnsen and Moe, compiled by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe and first published in 1841. Nikolai Astrup read and deeply admired these stories as a child. A new translation of the tales by Tiina Nunnally introduces readers to giant trolls, talking animals, and other remarkable beings that inspired Astrup in his creation of magical landscapes.

Bass René Pape, the world’s reigning Boris, reprises his tremendous portrayal of the tortured tsar caught between grasping ambition and crippling paranoia, kicking off the highly anticipated 2021–22 Live in HD season. Conductor Sebastian Weigle leads Mussorgsky’s masterwork, a pillar of the Russian repertoire, in its original 1869 version. Stephen Wadsworth’s affecting production poignantly captures the hope and suffering of the Russian people, as well as the title ruler himself.
