In 1856, Herman Melville wrote a short story, “The Piazza,” while living at Arrowhead. In this tale, the narrator believes he sees fairy lights on Mt. Greylock. “Enchanted Berkshires: Where Fairies Dance” exhibits one-of-a-kind, artist created Fairy Houses.

Book Release: I Will Never Forget…Memoir of a B26 Pilot

The Berkshire County Historical Society will release its latest book. “I Will Never Forget…” is the memoir of a B-26 pilot, Abraham “Artie” Artig, who served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. This event, in the big red barn at Arrowhead, is free. Books will be available for sale. There is an accompanying exhibit featuring Artig and several other Berkshire County men and women who served in WWII.

Hike Monument Mountain with Melville and Hawthorne

In partnership with The Trustees of Reservations and Gordon Hyatt, we will hike Monument Mountain to hear the story of Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s first meeting, in 1850. Hyatt will give a talk at the base of the Mountain. At the top of the mountain we will hear William Cullen Bryant’s poem about the Mountain and share a “champagne” toast! Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Gather at the Monument Mountain Reservation parking lot.

The third annual Moby-Dick marathon reading will commence in the barn and continue for the next three days until we finish the book. The reading is interrupted, for the morning of Sunday the 4th to attend the Monument Mountain walk celebrating the day that Melville met Hawthorne. The marathon concludes on Monday, August 5.

J. Peter Bergman will read from his new novel, “Cement Dust,” at Arrowhead, in the barn. Copies of the book are on sale in the gift shop at Arrowhead. Berkshire Historical Society at Herman Melville's Arrowhead will open for tours of Melville's historic home beginning on Monday, June 29, in accordance with the state's guidelines. We will be open Thursdays through Mondays each week, with call-ahead reservations and online ticketing. Our tour schedule will allow time for staff to sanitize the shared spaces and prepare to safely welcome the next group.
