This winter will look a little different at ski areas in the Berkshires, but the season is definitely on.

Skiing at Ski Butternut.Skiing and boarding in the Berkshires is as special as any experience here, thanks to the fresh mountain air, fabulous scenery, and proximity to the region’s cultural gems. At our independently owned resorts, you’ll find family-friendly fun on a wide variety of terrain, with something to please all ages and abilities. Here’s a look at what to expect this season.

One of the best parts of skiing in the Berkshires is that there are a number of resorts to choose from, and all offer something unique. With your purchase of a Berkshire Summit Pass you can experience the well-groomed trails and exciting terrain parks located at Catamount, Bousquet, and Berkshire East—all within a short drive of most major cities in the Northeast and without the big-mountain traffic and crowds. Also be sure to take some time to enjoy the terrain offered at Jiminy Peak (Massachusetts largest ski area) and Ski Butternut. Take a lesson to sharpen your skills, be challenged on black diamond trails, or head over to the tubing hill (offered at some of the mountains) for a thrilling ride. You’ll also find exhilarating night skiing at many of these locations. Before heading out to hit the slopes, remember to check ski conditions!

So, what’s new this year? Along with new ownership and management at Bousquet, you’ll find upgrades to their snowmaking and grooming systems, a triple chairlift, and a new beginner ski area. Catamount also has made major improvements to their snowmaking and terrain. Snacks and lunch offerings will be offered primarily outdoors this year, so be prepared to stay outside for the majority of your visit.

Similarly, COVID-19 has presented its challenges in keeping the slopes accessible while maintaining staff’s and ski area guests’ safety. One thing for you to consider is that season passes to all Berkshire ski areas are recommended this year. As is the case across the country, most resorts in the Berkshires will be limiting daily capacity to foster social distancing. Pass holders will receive priority. Also, whether you have a season’s pass or not, booking a reservation is strongly encouraged (and may be required) to ensure you can ski on your preferred dates. That said, this season’s passes have some flexibility built in. Check with each ski area for more info on their policies about deferring your pass should you not be able to use it due to COVID-related limitations or closures.

If you’re not interested in a pass or prefer scenery over speed, there are other snowy options to get you outside and in the Berkshires’ fresh air. Find inspiration for snowmobiling, snow hiking, and cross-country skiing here. Notchview, Maple Corner Farm, and Hilltop Orchards all offer some of the finest cross-country skiing in the region.

A day outdoors enjoying the winter wonderland of western Massachusetts is the perfect escape. Discover the serenity of playing outdoors this winter in the Berkshires!
