Chesterwood Exhibit: Create to Free Yourselves

Arts and Culture, Diversity and Inclusion, History and Heritage

August 4, 2023 | 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Sundays and Mondays and Wednesdays and Thursdays and Fridays and Saturdays

The artwork for this exhibition was originally commissioned and exhibited by President Lincoln´s Cottage at the Soldiers Home in Washington, DC. The objects in the President Lincoln’s Cottage exhibit—including books, newspapers, handwritten notes, and artwork created by a team of artists in Benin—have relationships with one another, with their creators, and with the space itself. Returning home to Benin following a visit to Chesterwood, Adéagbo worked with local artists to create new items in response to his visit and to photos he requested from the Chesterwood archives. Create to Free Yourselves will be recreated using the original items, along with new items specific to Chesterwood,
