Open Studios in the Berkshires

ArtWeek 2020 will run May 1-10, 2020 across the Commonwealth and in the Berkshires. Through this innovative festival, local ArtWeek partners will work together to spotlight the Berkshires’ creative economy, cultural treasures, artistic assets, and so much more.

Open Studios In The Berkshires will be a county-wide open studio event during ArtWeek, May 1-10. Get behind-the-scenes as artists throughout the Berkshires open their studios to the public. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn about the creation of their artworks through discussions and demonstrations of their processes

Represented by Sohn Fine Art Gallery, artist John Clarke opens his studio to the public for a behind-the-scenes view of his process, materials and works in progress. Over the past three years, Clarke has been combining drawing, painting and photography to create large-scale, one-of-a-kind pieces that live somewhere between photographic reality and the mysterious, subjective world of abstraction.

Sarah believes that the foundation for her work is found in her drawings. Keeping an almost daily regime of drawing from the natural world, keeps the eye to hand relationship strong. Making lines, whether dominate or fragile, speaks to that space that Sarah loves to inhabit – catching that particular moment on paper or canvas, using gesture, spontaneity and imagination.

Another part of a painters discipline is found in the act of daydreaming – spending a certain amount of time being a host to whatever images and feelings visit. To gather those moments to incubate, reverberate and then settle until they form the start of a painting.

Sarah will have both recent paintings and drawings on display at her studio.

1Berkshire is serving as a regional collaborator for this event and is working in conjunction with the community partners of the Downtown Great Barrington Cultural District, Lenox Cultural District, North Adams Cultural District, Upstreet Cultural District in Pittsfield, and Williamstown Cultural District, as well as Art Lenox. Across Massachusetts, there are over 100 other statewide, regional, and local partners working to get businesses engaged and involved in this festival.
