Soon to be framed in a gorgeous complexion of colors, the cultural stops in the Berkshires are ripe for Fall exploration. At the north end of the County, check out MASS MoCA in North Adams for thought-provoking contemporary art, intriguing Kids Space activities, and lively performances. Just down the road in Williamstown, the Clark Art Institute’s campus is ablaze with color on the outside, and alive with art and art history inside. Grab lunch at the Museum’s Cafe 7, and sit outside to enjoy the view in the comfort of an Adirondack chair. Take a stroll to the Williams College Museum of Art, where you will be inspired by its creative exhibitions and programming. Nearby, you can peruse the shelves and walls of ROAM for original African art and wildlife photography, and maybe discover a must-have piece to take home.
Animals of the World – in miniature. Objects and Their Stories. And perfect for Fall – Berkshires Backyard. Find these exciting exhibitions, as well as an aquarium and reptile room, at the Berkshire Museum. At nearby Hancock Shaker Village, experience some of those animals up close, and learn Shaker history through art, hands-on activities, and events. Wear your boots and cozy sweaters to walk the grounds with the crunch of leaves under each step. In Stockbridge, take in history through the iconic illustrations of artist Norman Rockwell at the Norman Rockwell Museum. You won’t want to miss the Tony Sarg: Genius at Play exhibition.
Amidst the more traditional museum stops, perhaps you will want to make room for a bit of haunted fun while you are here. After all, Fall is the season for ghosts, pumpkins, and hay mazes! Listen to Edith Wharton’s short stories read aloud and take a ghost tour at The Mount, Edith Wharton’s Home; take a cemetery tour at the Berkshire County Historical Society; or brace yourself for a paranormal investigation at Ventfort Hall Mansion and Gilded Age Museum. Visit the phenomenal Naumkeag Pumpkin Show, and the many harvest fests scheduled throughout the county to experience culture through a Fall lens.
A good museum excursion pairs well with a bit of boutique shopping. When you feel the warm Fall sunshine and hear the calming rustle of colorful leaves, a stroll down Main Street in Stockbridge is a must. Top off your afternoon with a hot cup of tea on the porch of the Red Lion Inn. Find a keepsake or treasured art piece in downtown Lenox, and then how about a delightful croissant at Patisserie? Make sure your Fall in the Berkshires allows time to mosey through the many shops and eateries in Great Barrington. Looking for heartier fare? Check out our Food & Drink options! From crafts to clothing and cannabis, you are sure to find your own cultural connection across the Berkshires!
