The exhibition, guest curated by Sharon Bates, showcases commissioned new artworks and adapted works by 15 artists whose works directly respond to the environmental and aesthetic attributes of Chesterwood. Featured artists include Roberley Bell, Roger Bisbing, Isidro Blasco, Colin C. Boyd, Matt Crane, Couglas Culhane, Brian Kane and Michael Oatman, Matt LaFleur, Portia Munson, Derek Parker, Amy Podmore, Chrissy Scolaro, Amelia Toelke, and Deborah Zlotsky.

Physical Collage with artists Brian Kane and Michael Oatman

Brian Kane and Michael Oatman have collaborated intermittently for over 30 years. ‘The 8th Wonder’ – their inflatable sculpture on display at Chesterwood – was not a breeze to make. Its troubled beginnings include pole dancers, the U-Haul Corporation, the former Mayor of Toronto, and Peter Paul Rubens. Using drawings, video, and hazy recollections from 2014, the artists will discuss the sometimes hilarious, sometimes frustrating process that led to the creation of ‘The 8th Wonder’ – out of thin air.…

Stages of WHIPLASH with artist Amy Podmore

Amy Podmore often uses figurative elements in her sculptures. She will discuss the development and fabrication processes involved in the making of ‘WHIPLASH,’ her work included in this year’s contemporary sculpture exhibition. She will share small, early versions of this work as well as test drawings and images of the work in different stages. Free with museum admission; children under 13 free.

The Camp, From the Homestead with artist Matt LaFleur

Matt LaFleur is a fifth-generation caretaker of his family homestead in Taborton, NY, which is the inspiration for his installation and two-dimensional artworks. He also spent the last decade as a professional chimney sweep, and wood, in various forms, is the dominant material he utilizes in his art practice. He will discuss his piece in the exhibition, titled ‘The Camp,’ the trees on the grounds at Chesterwood and their unique characteristics, and his own family’s land history. Free with museum…

Home Sweet Home” with artist Amelia Toelke

Amelia Toelke will draw on her training in jewelry and metalsmithing to discuss her piece in the exhibition, titled ‘Home Sweet Home,’ and the significance of jewelry as a reflection of its own time in history. She will bring materials so that visitors can create their own monogram charm using metal letter punches and brass. Free with museum admission; children under 13 free.
