Community Access to the Arts

Art, Joy, and Accessibility for Every Body and Mind

Creativity and healing should never have barriers. Across Berkshire County, cultural and community organizations are setting the standard for accessibility and thoughtful inclusion. 

• Community Access to the Arts (CATA): CATA continuously champions artists with disabilities. Their annual “I Am A Part of Art” exhibitions showcase remarkable artwork at two premier regional venues: the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts in Pittsfield and The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown.
• Blue Rider Stables (Egremont): A beloved mainstay in the South County community for decades, Blue Rider Stables offers therapeutic equestrian education and riding. They foster deep connection through inclusive community gatherings like their 3rd Saturday Open Houses & Pony Rides and their annual Fun Day at French Park.
• Berkshire Museum (Pittsfield): Newly renovated and reimagined, the Berkshire Museum prioritizes an accessible visitor experience for all ages and abilities, providing manual wheelchairs onsite, audio aids, and barrier-free exhibit navigation.
• The Clark Art Institute (Williamstown): Beyond offering assistive devices, The Clark features specialized, intentional programming—including educator-led gallery tours designed specifically for groups with developmental disabilities, as well as compassionate programming for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

Honoring Heritage & Cultural Equity

The Berkshires’ past, present, and future are deeply shaped by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders, artists, and visionaries.

• Upper Housatonic Valley African American Heritage Trail: Winding through 29 towns across Massachusetts and Connecticut, this self-guided heritage trail celebrates the pivotal roles played by African Americans in regional, national, and international history—from W.E.B. Du Bois to Elizabeth “Mumbet” Freeman.
• Blackshires Community Empowerment Foundation: A driving force for regional progress, this nonprofit works tirelessly to advance economic justice, leadership development, and cultural equity for BIPOC communities across Berkshire County and beyond.
• Jacob’s Pillow (Becket): A true pillar of the global dance world, this legendary venue brings world-renowned, culturally diverse movement to the mountains. From performances by Ballet Hispánico and Ephrat Asherie Dance to year-round regional programming and meaningful fire pit gatherings at the Indigenous Garden, Jacob’s Pillow connects dance, land, and heritage.

Inclusive Gathering Places 

Whether you are looking for a vibrant evening event, a welcoming cafe, or a stylish place to rest your head, the Berkshires offer a warm embrace for LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and allies.

• WANDER Berkshires (Pittsfield): Located in downtown Pittsfield, WANDER has swiftly become the town square for folks from every walk of life—artists, gig workers, tarot readers, knitters, retirees, and young families. As a pioneering trans-owned, recovery-focused cafe and community venue, WANDER serves up functional botanical teas and zero-proof mocktails alongside a packed schedule of support groups, Drag Bingo, live music, comedy acts, and community potlucks.
• Berkshires Untold (Lenox): A chic boutique lifestyle hotel set in a reimagined 1970s lodge. Combining retro-inspired interiors with modern, nature-driven comfort, it offers a stylish, relaxed, and welcoming escape for all travelers.
• MASS MoCA (North Adams): Known worldwide for vast, groundbreaking contemporary art installations, MASS MoCA’s open-ended visual and performing arts spaces consistently center diverse, queer, and forward-thinking creators.
• Smith College Museum of Art (Northampton): Located just a short drive into neighboring Hampshire County, this bustling art institution offers expansive collections and inclusive programming that complement a day trip through the region.

• Berkshires Outside: Visit berkshiresoutside.org for comprehensive guides detailing accessible trails, adaptive outdoor activities, parks, and recreation sites designed for visitors of all physical abilities.
• Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC): BNRC continues to expand its Accessible Trails Initiative, building smooth, wide-graded paths (such as the Parson’s Marsh Trail in Lenox and Old Suffield Road Trail in Southfield) that allow wheelchair users, families with strollers, and folks with limited mobility to immerse themselves in the magnificent peace of the forests and waters.
