TLI: Art and the Rule of Law

Performing Arts & Entertainment

  • ,
  • August 7 | 10:30 am - 12:30 pm on Fridays

“A government of laws, not of men.” With those seven words, John Adams proposed a new American ideal: justice as a shared promise, not a ruler’s whim. But what does it feel like to live in a society that honors — or breaches — that principle? From Eroica to Guernica, artists have long illuminated the moral force of justice. In this special course, Juilliard’s Lesley Rosenthal, a leading figure in the worlds of law and the performing arts, explores the Rule of Law through musical and visual works that celebrate this ideal and protest its absence. Art and the Rule of Law may be purchased as a series or on a class-by-class basis.
