Saggar Swagger: Intro to Saggar Firing
May 24 | 1:30 pm - 4:30 pm
$125
This is a two-day class. Discover the ancient and unpredictable art of saggar firing in this immersive workshop. Historically used in ancient China to protect ceramic wares from ash and debris in wood kilns, the saggar – a lidded ceramic container – is used today as a vessel to trap atmospheric effects around a pot. Day 1: Preparation & Firing from 1:30-4:30 pm (3 Hours). We begin with a brief dive into the history and evolution of this unique technique before getting hands-on. Using a variety of organic materials and chemical colorants, students will wrap their bisqueware to create specific ‘fuming’ effects. Once prepared, pieces are nestled into saggars and loaded into our outdoor kiln for a transformative firing session which takes about an hour. Day 2: The Reveal from 1:30-2:30 pm (1 hour, outdoors). The magic of saggar firing is truly found in the unveiling. We will gather the following day to unload the kiln and open the saggars.
