Hike: Huckleberry Trolley Line

Nature and Recreation, Online Event

  • December 15, 2025 | 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Join us to hike and walk on the historic trolley line dubbed “The Three Million Dollar Failure” in the center of Huntington which is the most
historic Huckleberry Trolley locations! Learn about the line that ran from Lee to Huntington and view the collection of construction photos and maps that we have compiled from the last ten years of research. Ordered by the Massachusetts Legislature of the special act of 1910 which authorized the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad (which they opposed) to build a transportation route through the towns of Huntington, Blandford, Otis, Becket and Lee. The Western Massachusetts Contracting Company was awarded the construction contract and work began in East Lee in the Spring of 1910. Despite problems from the rolling terrain, small streams, ponds and dense woods, progress was rapid at first and the entire line was built by November 1915. It was 12.54 miles long and completely over budget. The line operated until 1918. Our exclusive Huckleberry Trolley Collection of postcards, construction photos and more will be on display for this event. Enjoy hot
    cocoa and cookies too!
