Catamount Mountain Resort Explore a fun Berkshire outdoor adventure!
The Berkshires is home to hundreds of miles of hiking trails, sparkling lakes, and plenty of outdoor adventures for every vibe. To help you plan your next outing, here are eight incredible outdoor experiences you won’t find anywhere else! Discover more action-packed activities in the Berkshires here.
Experience the Northeast’s Longest Dual-Span Zipline
Yes, the mile-long CataMonster zipline at Catamount Mountain Resort reaches adrenaline-pumping speeds up to 55+ mph, but you control how fast you go. A scenic chairlift ride gets you to the starting point. For more ways to test your mettle, explore the aerial adventure parks at Catamount, Jiminy Peak and Ramblewild.

Berkshire East
Ride New England’s Longest Mountain Coaster
It’s at Berkshire East and it’s called the Thunderbolt, and one descent on its 3,870 feet of twisting, curving downhill track will show you that it’s aptly named. You control whether you race to the bottom or brake to ease up. Either way, this is one exhilarating coaster ride!
Bike the Berkshires, On and Off-Road
Expert outfitters such as Berkshire Bike and Board and Arcadian Shop are excellent resources for equipment, rentals, and info on where to bike in the Berkshires—from bikepacking trips to short day rides. For purpose-built downhill mountain bike trails, head for Thunder Mountain Bike Park at Berkshire East or for a more gentle ride hit the 14+ mile long Ashuwillticook Rail Trail.
Hike, Bike, and Kayak on a Wellness Retreat
Spend your time while on a retreat at spa and wellness resorts such as Miraval Berkshires Resort and Spa, Canyon Ranch Lenox, and Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health with guided active outdoor adventures that take you out into the beautiful Berkshire landscape. Go mountain biking, paddleboarding, and hiking as part of a group outing or on a private excursion. Ever tried a ropes course? How about climbing?
Find Your Fun on the Water
Love spending time on the water? How about a thrilling river-rafting trip? Crab Apple Whitewater, just east of the Berkshires, offers exciting day- and multi-day excursions perfect for families and groups. Or take a day for boating and fishing on a glacial lake such as Onota in Pittsfield, with a stop at Onota Boat Livery for rentals and essential boating and fishing supplies.
Take a Scenic Flight
Book a private sightseeing flight over the beautiful southern Berkshires with Berkshire Aviation, based at the Great Barrington airport. Trips are 30 minutes to an hour.

Huttopia Berkshires
Go Camping (or Glamping)
There are plenty of camping options in the Berkshires, from backcountry lean-tos on the Appalachian Trail to state parks and campgrounds with tent sites and RV hookups. If your idea of camping includes a soft bed (and a swimming pool), book a cabin or ready-to-camp site at Huttopia Berkshires, opening in summer 2025 at the base of Jiminy Peak.
Explore 850+ miles of mapped trails (with an app)
The Berkshire Natural Resources Council (BNRC) acquires natural spaces in Berkshire County and opens them up for exploring on foot. Find (and share) your desired adventure with the BNRC app, whether that’s a fishing spot, forest walk, or rigorous hike. The Trustees and Mass Audubon also maintain trails, including universally accessible routes. Visit BerkshiresOutside.org for even more outdoor inspo!
After all this outdoor fun in the Berkshires, be sure to enjoy some chilling out time. A rejuvenating spa treatment, delicious restaurant meal, and comfy lodging are all part of the adventure. See you out there!
