Whether you’re shopping for quality clothing for yourself or a unique gift for that certain someone, the Berkshires offer an abundance of distinctive shopping choices. Along with wonderful shops throughout the villages and towns, some of the most noteworthy shopping can be found in the area’s museums and art galleries.
In North Adams you’ll find MASS MoCA’s museum shop which has a delightful children’s section, books on Modern Art (including a selection of Sol LeWitt books) and handcrafts made by local artists. Some current shop favorites include a dress made with MASS MoCA emblems and an Upside Down Grass Kit which is a mini version of the living upside down tree exhibit that is on display outside the front entrance. The museum’s shop also carries a line of modernistic kitchen implements, fabulous jewelry, clothing and accessories.
The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge has a quaint store that carries all things Norman Rockwell. On display, there are prints, books on his life, and Rockwell’s artwork found on everything from note cards to silk ties. There is jewelry, including a delightful bracelet featuring the buildings of Rockwell’s iconic Main Street miniaturized for your wrist. One may also wish to splurge on one of the special lithographs or prints signed by Rockwell himself. If you have a Rockwell admirer in your life you will certainly find this museum shop a pleasure to visit.
Not only does Hancock Shaker Village offer an idyllic view of the Berkshires and a historic look back into the past (and a nice cafe to have lunch), there is also a large museum shop that is perfect for browsing. With a wide selection of Shaker baskets and boxes, Shaker inspired prints, heirloom seeds, and do-it-yourself crafting kits (such as basket weaving); there is truly something for everyone at this shop. The children’s section is full of fun gifts for young and old and many of the items focus on what else, but farm animals! A stop into the museum shop is often a favorite part of the Shaker Village experience for children and very few leave empty handed.
The Berkshires are a prime destination for shopping, and we are fortunate to have not only wonderful stores and museum shops, but also a multitude of art galleries. Whether it is a once in a lifetime purchase, an impromptu gift, or simply to browse, the Berkshire’s art galleries are sure to bring out the art lover in anyone. At Sheffield Pottery, you will find everything from raw clay, which can be purchased in bulk, to hand thrown pots that will enhance any decor. They can also customize plates for weddings, anniversaries and births. Their family tree plates are popular with customers. The shop also carries a variety of gifts for the outdoor garden. Other art galleries, like Schantz Galleries, in Stockbridge, seem more like a small museum than merely a gallery. The display of sculptural glass art is stunning, and with works by artists such as Dale Chihuly, the visual feast that surrounds you will amaze. These are just a few of the multitude of options, but wherever you choose to do your shopping in the Berkshires, you’re sure to have a delightful adventure.
If art is what you are after, be sure not to miss the 14th Annual Berkshires Arts Festival which takes place July 3-5 at Butternut and the Berkshire Crafts Fair on 8/14-16 in downtown Stockbridge. Wherever you find your shopping bliss in the Berkshires we know you will not leave our memorable destination empty handed.
