Recently, I decided that I needed to expand my Berkshire musical palette and where better to start than the Castle Street Cafe? There are countless places to see live music of almost any genre in the Berkshires and in almost any kind of venue. I had been to Castle Street Cafe for their enticing American cuisine but had yet to check out their live music offerings, which they have scheduled year round.
The cafe is directly next door to the Mahaiwe Theater, just off of Main Street in Great Barrington. There is an intimate and inviting dining room, where esteemed chef Michael Ballon serves up deliciously sophisticated, yet casual fare. The bar and lounge area has ambient lighting, and rich, warm woods throughout, leaving patrons feeling welcome and relaxed. Castle Street Cafe serves up a musical menu that is as eclectic and tempting as their dinner menu. Some nights there are sultry blues bands playing, other nights you can listen to folksy, acoustic music. Every weekend though, you are guaranteed to hear some live jazz.
As I had arrived a bit late, I found a packed bar but as luck was able to grab the last open bar stool. I settled in and ordered a drink, which was delivered promptly and perfectly made. I also ordered a Mediterranean Eggplant Sampler, as I hadn’t had a chance to eat dinner earlier. I then turned my attention to the band and listened to some great tunes for the next hour. As I looked around the room it seemed as though the rest of the patrons were enjoying it as much as I was.
Listening to live music at the cafe was a nice experience and I plan to go back soon. The next time though, I will arrive a bit earlier so that I can get a table in the lounge area which I would suggest to anyone else who plans to attend their musical performances. I would also recommend either their fabulous restaurant menu or their pub menu, both of which are guaranteed to please. Thanks to Castle Street Cafe for expanding my musical palette in a very good way.
