Exploring Culture at Our Berkshire Summer Camps

Summer camps abound in the Berkshires and several of them have some pretty amazing cultural programs for campers to participate in.  The Berkshires are renowned for their cultural venues and events. The camps are part of this culture and they make sure that their campers are immersed in enriching cultural programs while balancing this with access to the great outdoors.

Camp Danbee is an all girls camp with a state of the art dance studio, creative arts studio and much more.  Their classes in arts and crafts include watercolor, stained glass, and jewelry making.  The theater program at Camp Danbee includes acting, improv, set design and everything you need to learn to be a part of the theater.  There is also a dance program that teaches beginning to advanced dancers, and the dancers perform in area nursing homes as ‘ Danbee Dance Company‘.

Camp Taconic is a co-ed sleep away camp that hosts a variety of arts related programs including pottery, sewing, painting and music.  They have a playhouse with a professional stage and put on full productions with all work, from stage and set design to the acting, all performed by the children.  Camp Taconic also offers some special fun with their circus program, where kids can learn circus arts (including the trapeze!).

Belvoir Terrace offers girls from second grade and up, a summer camp in the fabulous setting of one the Berkshires Gilded Age estates.  With some of the finest instructors in the area as part of their staff, Belvoir Terrace guides girls in fine arts, printmaking, photography, and fabric/fashion design.  Their dance program features classes from classical ballet to jazz and tap.  There is also a wonderful music program that offers girls instruction in opera and chamber music, as well as traditional classes in piano, wind and string instruments.   Theater at Belvoir Terrace is taken very seriously, with classes such as acting, improv, musical theater and more.  Though they are serious about performing, it is all accomplished with fun, and no previous acting experience is necessary.

Camp Half Moon offers a day camp, as well as a sleep away camp and has classes in dance, drama, ceramics, and more.  Camp Greylock for Boys, in Becket, and its sister camp Camp Romaca for Girls, in Hinsdale, gives children the chance to participate in dance, creative arts, performing arts and music to enhance their time away at camp.

Don’t forget that Shakespeare & Company offers a theater camp and if you have children interested in gardening check out the Berkshire Botanical Garden’s summer camp offerings.
