In conjunction with the Arabesque exhibition, dancer-choreographer Jody Sperling appears live at the Clark to share the artistry of modern dance pioneer Loïe Fuller and explore the arabesque influence on dance. Using fabric, motion, and light, Fuller created a unique art form that made her the embodiment of the Art Nouveau movement. Sperling is the foremost modern interpreter of Fuller’s distinctive choreography.

Hustle originated in New York City in the 1970s when the “dance floor served as a progressive town square” and way before the commercialized craze of Saturday Night Fever and the Disco era. Lamentation Variations is an ongoing creative project in which some of today’s top choreographers create new dances for the Graham Company inspired by a film of Martha Graham dancing her iconic solo from 1930, Lamentation. The evening will include archival footage of Graham discussing and dancing Lamentation, and a narrated demonstration of Graham’s revolutionary movement vocabulary based on the “contraction and release.”
