This course explores the many aspects of the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), designed to permanently guarantee equal rights for all American citizens regardless of gender. First introduced to Congress in 1923, it was approved by the House of Representatives in 1971 and the U.S. Senate in 1972. It then needed ratification by 38 state legislatures by 1979, but only reached 35. More recently the Nevada and Illinois state legislatures ratified it in 2017 and 2018 respectively.
