Since its premiere in 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony has graced concert stages around the world. As an enduring work of art, it played a role in the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, was rewritten for our time by the British punk/folk singer Billy Bragg, provided solace to those struggling for freedom in Pinochet’s Chile, and continues to fill seats in symphony halls and karaoke bars from London to Tokyo and Cape Town. Each December, 5000 Japanese choristers take to the stage to sing the final movement’s “Ode to Joy.” Following The Ninth tracks Beethoven’s “battle cry for humanity,” across five continents and in fifteen countries, capturing the enduring power and beauty of Beethoven’s magnum opus.
