What’s Happening at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center?

This season the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is celebrating its tenth anniversary as a year-round hub of dynamic performances and screenings in downtown Great Barrington.
The theater is humming with audiences of all ages, applauding their favorite talents onstage and screen. Nearby restaurants and shops are buzzing with visitors, enjoying the energy and beautiful foliage of the fall.

This coming Columbus Day weekend features Lucinda Williams (already sold out) and a gala evening with the incomparable 6-time Tony Award winner Audra McDonald, followed by festive fireworks over Memorial Field. Art Garfunkel arrives onstage in mid-November for a rare appearance, and later next month Arlo Guthrie joins us to introduce a pre-Thanksgiving screening of Alice’s Restaurant.

The Mahaiwe celebrates the holidays with John Pizzarelli’s Swing Seven Sinatra Centennial. Throughout the winter, high definition broadcasts fill our big screen with international fare –including Hamlet with Benedict Cumberbatch, Jane Eyre, and Les Liaisons Dangereuses from London’s National Theatre; Bolshoi Ballet with Taming of the Shrew and The Nutcracker, and the Met Opera with bonus-added pre-opera talks by Juilliard’s Scott Eyerly.

We round out the winter with classic feature films, including Back to the Future, the Wizard of Oz, a free screening of It’s a Wonderful Life, and skier favorites such as Pretty Faces and Warren Miller’s Chasing Shadows. There is much more to come during the 2016 lineup: in February, Del McCoury and David Grisman team up onstage for a rare bluegrass duo: An Evening with Del & Dawg and the sardonic David Sedaris returns for a reading of new works in April. Imago’s ZOO ZOO will take to the stage this spring to delight children with a madcap revue of illusion and acrobatics.

The Mahaiwe is full of unique, artistic far. Come on in, for a great night out. Looking for other great ideas of things to do in the Berkshires, be sure to bookmark the Berkshire event calendar and start making plans to come and visit.
