Helen Frankenthaler had a longstanding, if ambivalent, relationship to the tradition of landscape painting. From her earliest, reputation-making work of the 1950s, to her late, experimental paintings of the 1990s, this ambivalent relationship to landscape presents a constant tension in her art. In this opening lecture for As in Nature: Helen Frankenthaler Paintings, exhibition curator Alexandra Schwartz discusses how these twelve large-scale paintings, made over the course of Frankenthaler’s long career, engage with this tension. Work with artists from the New England Puppet Intensive to create an illuminated sculpture in preparation for the annual Berkshire Lantern Walk on Thursday, July 6 at 9 pm. Reed and bamboo materials will be provided. Bring your own Mason jar (recommended for younger children) and transform it into a lantern to carry with you during a night time exploration of the Clark’s grounds. Free.
