Join Curator of Education Tom Daly for a walking history tour of Stockbridge Cemetery, which boasts the burial sites of such luminaries as Norman Rockwell, Elizabeth Freeman, and the Sedgwick Family. A cider and donut reception will precede the tour on the lawn adjacent to the Old Town Hall. $5, members and children 18 and under free.

This exhibition will explore the breadth of this Golden Age artist’s career, beginning with Schoonover’s art school experiences as a student in Pyle’s classes at the newly founded Drexel Institute of Art, Science, and Industry in Philadelphia, beginning in 1896, and his time at the Chadds Ford Summer School in 1899, where he honed his skills among other gifted Pyle pupils.

Frank E. Schoonover: American Visions traces the creative and geographical journey of Golden Age illustrator Frank Earle Schoonover (1877-1972). Schoonover’s dynamic adventure paintings and illustrations for literary classics were inspired by the belief that artists should live what they paint—an adage often repeated by his noted teacher, illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1911). Among the more than 80 works in the exhibition are Schoonover’s historical book illustrations and dramatically stage adventure paintings for such classic stories as Kidnapped, Robinson Crusoe, Swiss Family…

Norman Rockwell’s images of soldiers in all branches of the armed forces during World War I and II inspired a sense of nationalism, as well as a global understanding. Through the lens of his gritty worldview, Frank Miller has redefined the way comic books are written and drawn. Miller’s distinct style, world-building, and elevation of the anti-hero have awarded him every major comic book industry award and a global following. The exhibit will showcase over 100 original works created by Miller throughout his career and will include interactive displays designed by the artist.
