See new additions to WCMA’s American and European collections from the 16th to the 20th centuries mixed with favorites including Grant Wood’s Death on the Ridge Road, on view for the first time in over two years. Significant acquisitions installed for the first time include works by Edmonia Lewis, Marie Spartali-Stillman, and thirteen preliminary drawings by Paul Cadmus for WCMA’s painting Point O’View.

This focused exhibition highlights WCMA’s recently-acquired portfolio of eighteen photographs by James Van Der Zee (1886-1983) during the first half of the 20th century. Born and raised in Lenox, Massachusetts, Van Der Zee established a thriving photography studio in Harlem by 1916, and served as the foremost chronicler of black life in New York City during the early 20th century.
