Ask soon-to-be high school junior and experienced thespian Caroline Fairweather about family-friendly theater opportunities in the Berkshires this summer, and she has a lot of recommendations. “Seussical [Berkshire Theater Group] —It’s going to be so colorful and ‘in your face’ and exciting.” Caroline, who will play the Sour Kangaroo in the production at the Colonial running Aug. 7-17, told me recently.”
Caroline also recommends this summer’s Youth Theatre production at Barrington Stage Company (Hairspray Jr., running July 23 and Aug. 10) and catching one of the region’s many outdoor performances such as “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” (Springside Park Pittsfield, July 17-27); Shakespeare & Company’s The Servant of Two Masters (Rose Footprint Theatre, June 20-Aug. 23) and Romeo and Juliet (The Dell at The Mount, July 17-Aug. 23); and Robin Hood (Williamstown Theatre Festival, July 16-19; 22-25).
I personally can’t wait to see Kiss Me Kate with my family at Barrington Stage (through July 12); and Seussical, of which my 12-year-old son is also a cast member; and I can’t decide between June Moon (through July 2-13) or The Old Man and The Old Moon (Aug . 6-17) at WTF.
But wait there’s more!
We’ve got final productions of summer theater camps at Berkshire Theatre Group; Barrington Stage Company; Starlight Stage (Peter Pan, July 23-26); and the Central Berkshire Regional School Districts Stages camp final production (July 25) to name a few; free Saturday morning family theater workshops at WTF; the annual summer production of the Berkshire Children’s Theater at the Berkshire Museum (set for Aug. 21-23); and I haven’t even checked what’s playing over the boarder at the Theater Barn in New Lebanon, New York; the Ghent Playhouse in Ghent, New York; or Old Castle Theater Company in Bennington, Vt. Oh wait … now I have. Add Old Castle’s My Fair Lady (Aug. 15-31) — come on it’s a classic — and The Addams Family (Aug. 21-31) at the Theater Barn to that list.
Oh my kids are going to get their theater fill this summer. How about yours? I highly suggest you get yourself and your family to an area theater immediately! Your kids will thank you.
