Featured Chef: Davide Manzo of Trattoria Rustica
Davide Manzo, chef and owner of Trattoria Rustica, was born and raised in Pompeii Italy. He is third generation of Cucina Napoletana. With Trattoria Rustica he has created an authentic Italian experience in the Berkshires: from the decor, built with his own hands, to the artful preparation of “Antichi Sapori”, the ancient flavors of Pompeii. Davide often engages in active dialogue with his patrons, sharing with them about his ideas, educating everyone who comes in the door in one way or another about the food, wine, people, music and traditions of Italy and especially his native Pompeii.
Featured Farm: Lakeview Orchard
David and Judy Jurczak started Lakeview Orchard in 1996 by planting 1,000 dwarf apple trees and 50 blueberry bushes. Their orchard overlooks Hoosac Lake and offers a panoramic view of the valley and the surrounding mountains. Today at their farm you will find apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, plums, pears, and apricots along with red and black raspberries. Be sure to stop on by to enjoy a “pick your own” experience or pick up some fresh baked goods or cider from their farm stand.
Featured Product: Sourdough Bread from Berkshire Mountain Bakery
Walk through the door of Berkshire Mountain Bakery located in Housatonic, Massachusetts in the heart of the Berkshires and you will find yourself in the midst of a baking flurry with baker/owner, Richard Bourdon, orchestrating the production. Bourdon studied and practiced the art of natural sourdough bread baking in Europe. It was there that he headed one of the first bakeries in Holland to revive and develop this neglected way of baking. Today these traditional techniques rule the baking process at Berkshire Mountain Bakery and so most of their bread are naturally leavened with sourdough fermentation and hand shaped. The result is very digestible and delicious bread.
