The BVB is proud to be a partner in 1Berkshire, the County’s Regional Economic Development Organization, and to announce the selection of Berkshire Health Systems as the 2014 honoree for Putting the Berkshires on the Map in recognition of the substantial contribution BHS is making to the overall image of the Berkshires. Berkshire Health Systems will be recognized at the fourth annual Celebrate the Berkshires event on September 9, 2014 at the Pittsfield Airport. Tickets to the event are available by clicking here.
With over 3,000 employees, BHS is the Berkshires’ largest employer and includes Berkshire Medical Center, Fairview Hospital, the Berkshire VNA and BMC and Fairview physician practices. In late 2013, Berkshire Health Systems opened the first phase of the new BMC Cancer Center, which, when completed in 2015, will provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art cancer care services, all in one location on the picturesque Hillcrest Campus of BMC. This over $30 million investment will give cancer patients and their loved ones access to a full range of clinical care with integrative services, including a Wellness Center on-site.
“Berkshire Health Systems has been honored by Truven Analytics as a 100 Top Hospital, by Healthgrades with its Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence and by CareChex as a Top 100 Hospital for Overall Hospital Care,” said Lauri Klefos, President & CEO of the BVB and Chief Marketing Officer for 1Berkshire. “These awards are indicative of the kind of quality healthcare BHS provides, rivaling the level of care normally found in more metropolitan areas, and also highlights the power they have in drawing people here to work and to live by demonstrating that we have an incredible network of healthcare options.”
Reggie Cooper, Chair of the Board of 1Berkshire and Managing Director of Canyon Ranch in Lenox points to the work BHS is doing to bring the Canyon Ranch Institute Life Enhancement Program to underserved members of the Berkshire community. This health and wellness education and training program is part of a long-term BHS investment in the community, focused on wellness and disease prevention. The core goal is to provide participants in the program with the knowledge and tools needed to make better choices and take better care of themselves and their loved ones. This innovative program has already helped to change the lives of 60 people, along with their family and friends, in Berkshire County.
“This partnership is a great example of Berkshire Health Systems commitment to improving the health and well-being of our community, which is a core of its mission. As a community we are fortunate to have BHS as a national leader in quality healthcare and the role that plays in enhancing the overall image, and health, of the Berkshires,” said Cooper. “We certainly have seen that in their recent efforts to stabilize and restore needed healthcare services in Northern Berkshire.”
When North Adams Regional Hospital closed in March of 2014, Berkshire Health Systems quickly stepped in and assumed responsibility for essential healthcare services, including primary care and OB/GYN practices, home health care and hospice services, laboratory and imaging. In May, BHS opened a 24-hour Satellite Emergency Facility in North Adams, providing comprehensive critical and non-critical emergency care services. As a result, BHS hired over 150 former North Adams Regional Hospital employees to provide these services.
“We are so pleased to be recognized by 1Berkshire, an entity that fosters the ability to join forces to advance economic development,” said David Phelps, President and CEO of BHS. “The future of healthcare in the Berkshires is dependent on our ability to provide clinical excellence and economically sustainable services. We do this through continual investments in our people, our facilities and our technology. Examples of this include our unique partnership with the Elms College, providing tuition-free education for our employees who wish to advance in nursing, and other similar education initiatives, and our ongoing physician recruitment efforts that have been successful in bringing world-class physicians to practice in our community.”
Berkshire Health Systems will be the featured honoree at this year’s Celebrate the Berkshires event, which will also showcase Berkshire individuals and businesses who demonstrate excellence in several “Trendsetter Award” categories. The entire community is invited to come celebrate these achievements and commitments that have strengthened the local economy and helped the region grow. CLICK HERE FOR TICKETS!
