The Route 183 Corridor
By Hope Sullivan

June 2009

The Route 183 corridor between Lenox and Housatonic is not only of the most beautiful stretches in the Berkshires (take a look at the view from Kripalu) but, more importantly, home to some of the premier cultural attractions of our county. For music lovers there’s our regional superstar, Tanglewood and for visual artists there’s the Norman Rockwell Museum, ChesterwoodChesterwood and of course the community treasure, IS183 Art School– one of the few places in our region where people of all ages have an opportunity to stop spectating and just make something!

This July be sure to visit Chesterwood for its’ annual exhibition of contemporary sculpture. The opening celebration and award ceremony is Friday, July 3rd from 5 to 7pm.  The opening is always a ton of fun and a great chance to walk the grounds and preview the show. If you can’t make it on Friday not to worry, the show will remain open through the summer. To make your visit even richer, consider taking an art class.

Says Donna Hassler, Executive Director, "This summer, I am thrilled that Chesterwood has formed a collaboration with IS183 Art School, to bring people and the visual arts together at the country home, studio and gardens of Daniel Chester French, Gordon Chandler Sudokuone of America's foremost, monumental sculptors.”

The first class will be taught by the artist, Gordon Chandler (represented by the Ferrin Gallery, Pittsfield), whose sculpture "Easel and Bench" will be represented in this year's Contemporary Sculpture at Chesterwood 2009 exhibition. For a full course listing visit IS183.

A visit to the Norman Rockwell is a must-do while they celebrate their 40th anniversary. On July 4th their national traveling exhibition of original art from the Museum’s noted collections returns to Stockbridge. The exhibition chronicles Rockwell’s life and art, introducing new scholarship rooted in decades of study by Curator of Norman Rockwell Collections, Linda Pero. Be sure to return on July 11th for Peter Rockwell day. You can view the outstanding collection of his bronze, marble, and limestone sculptures across the pastoral grounds of the Museum. Or, join the artist, Norman’s youngest son, for a hands-on demonstration at 11 a.m. then at 2 p.m. he’ll be your guide through indoor and outdoor gallery spaces and at 5:30 p.m there will be a talk, book signing and reception to celebrate.
